Slow Death in Sibiria – a travel report from the coal basin Kuzbass (English translation below!)

Aus aktuellem Anlass und in Solidarität mit den politischen Gefangenen im Hambacher Forst, wollen wir uns diesen Sonntag thematisch dem dreckigsten aller Energieträger widmen, der Kohle. Nach wie vor gilt Deutschland trotz versprochener Energiewende als Braunkohle – Weltmeister. Zur Absicherung der deutschen Energiepolitik und Stahlindustrie wird zunehmend auf Exporte aus der Welt gesetzt. Russland spielt dabei als weltweit dritt-größter Exporteur, und sechst-größter Förderer eine wichtige Rolle. Die Hauptabbaugebiete liegen in der süd-sibirischen Region Kuzbass, ehemals bekannt für Internierungslager politischer Gefangener, Siedlungsgebiet der indigenen Bevölkerung Shor und Ausläufer der Taiga.
Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung soll ein Überblick zur Geschichte und aktuellen Situation in der Region gegeben werden. Wir wollen uns mit den dort aktiven Umweltbewegungen und ihren Mitteln vertraut machen, und Erfahrungen mit staatlicher Repression in Russland vermitteln. Auch sollen Sitmmen der Betroffenen in Form von Zeugnissen zu Wort kommen.

Because of current events and in solidarity with the imprisoned comrades from the Hambacher Forst, we will deal this Sunday with the heaviest polluted energycarrier coal. Nevertheless of high talkes about energy transition, Germany is still accountable for the biggest amount of coal business on the planet. To secure the german state‘s energy and steel industry, additional hard coal and lignite is imported from other regions. One of the main is the russian state, already ranked as third-biggest exporter and sixth in coal extraction industry. The main region for extraction is Kuzbass, formerly known for the large amount of Gulags, a settlement area for the indigenous tribes Shor and in close proximity to the prehistoric forests of the Taiga.
The presentation will contain a review of the history and current situation of coal mining in Kuzbass. We want to discuss how environmental and social justice groups can fight in the highly repressive atmosphere of the russian state. Part of the presentation contains testimonies from indigenous aswell as other affected people in the region.
